The Penny Quilt in Stay Gold and Five + Ten
Since I’ve already made the Penny Quilt Pattern several times in the past, this week I thought it would be fun to share my previous versions instead of making a brand-new sample. If you’re looking for inspiration for your own Penny Quilt, these two quilts highlight how versatile this pattern can be — whether you’re working with bold, modern fabrics or vintage-inspired prints.
The Penny Quilt in Stay Gold by Melody Miller
One of my favorite versions of the Penny Quilt is the one I made with the Stay Gold collection by Melody Miller (Ruby Star Society). This fabric line is filled with rich jewel tones, florals, and whimsical designs that really shine in the Penny Quilt layout.
The Penny Quilt layout allows you to showcase larger florals while balancing them with smaller scale designs. If you’re drawn to vibrant, modern fabrics, this pairing is perfect.

The Penny Quilt in Five + Ten by Denyse Schmidt
Another favorite version is my Five + Ten Penny Quilt, made with the Denyse Schmidt collection for Windham Fabrics. The vintage, flea-market inspired palette of this collection gives the quilt a completely different look — playful, nostalgic, and a little bit scrappy.
What I love most about using Five + Ten with the Penny Quilt is how the straightforward block construction highlights the charm of retro prints without overwhelming them. It’s a great reminder that this pattern works just as beautifully with more traditional collections as it does with modern ones.

Why the Penny Quilt Pattern Works with So Many Fabrics
The Penny Quilt Pattern is one of my most versatile designs. It:
-
Uses fat quarters efficiently (and is now fully fat quarter friendly in the updated version!)
-
Works with everything from bold modern prints to soft traditional collections
-
Scales beautifully, with instructions from baby size up to king size
-
Comes together quicker than you’d expect, making it a great choice for both stash-busting and curated bundles

If you’d like to try the Penny Quilt Pattern yourself, you can find it in both PDF and paper versions in my shop. The newly updated pattern includes queen and king sizing for the first time, plus improvements that make it even more fabric-efficient.
And if you need inspiration, I will be sharing two more quilts tomorrow and then lots of mockups on Saturday!
