The Blind Forest Quilt - Part 2
You might remember that when I released the Ori Quilt Pattern, I added a free tutorial to the shop with instructions for making two different quilts using the leftover scraps. I shared the first one right here using my leftover Animal Animal scraps (original Ori Quilt here), and I finally finished and photographed the second one that I made using my Echino scraps (original Ori Quilt here).

This quilt was based on a tutorial I wrote about a decade ago (see Lagoon HST quilt), but it increases the HST size to make a faster quilt and to make better use of the leftover pieces. It’s a simple, satisfying layout that’s perfect for leftover HSTs.

This quilt uses all of the leftover triangles for the Ori Quilt plus some extra background fabric. I love how the Echino squares work with the mint colored fabric (although it turned out to be QUITE difficult to get true to color in photographs). The background fabric color is Kona Pond.

The oversized HSTs really let the prints shine, and the playful geometry and negative space keep it from feeling too busy.

For the backing, I used a black and white Ruby Star Society print from Achroma. I like that it calmed down the colorful quilt top while also being fun and not taking itself too seriously. The binding is another, slightly darker green solid that is one of my favorites: Cotton Couture in Mermaid.

If you’ve made the Ori Quilt and have scraps waiting for a project, you can download the free Blind Forest tutorial right here. It includes instructions for both versions of the quilt, and it’s a great way to squeeze one more project out of your favorite fabric pull.

Let me know if you make one — I’d love to see your version!
