Blind Forest Tutorial Part 1 aka the Goat Quilt

Blind Forest Tutorial Part 1 aka the Goat Quilt

When I designed the Ori Quilt Pattern, I knew I wanted to include a way to use the leftover pieces created by the stitch-and-flip method. My original plan was to simply point you toward the Lagoon Quilt tutorial (which you’ll still find mentioned in the fabric recommendations if you purchased the paper version of the pattern). I also considered a quick blog writeup with some rough instructions.

But as I started putting these quilts together, I realized they deserved their own spot — so now the Blind Forest Quilt Tutorial has a dedicated (and free) place in the shop.

Two Scrap-Friendly Quilt Options

The Blind Forest Tutorial includes two quilt layouts, both designed to make the most of your leftover triangles from the Ori Quilt. The version I’m sharing today uses only the leftover HSTs, with no added background fabric required.

I ended up enlarging mine slightly by adding in a few Speckled scraps, since I was making it as a gift for my son and had a specific size in mind. The version in the tutorial finishes at 44” x 55”, which makes a great small lap quilt or child-size throw.

Using Ruby Star Society’s Animal Animal Fabric

I’ve already shared for my deep and abiding love of the Animal Animal collection from Ruby Star Society, and this project gave me even more reason to love it — I was able to make two quilts from one fabric pull.

In our house, my kids still fight over the rainbow Mini Plaid-ish quilt I made years ago (it has that ultra-soft luxe minky backing they love). So when I found a super snuggly gray luxe minky in my stash, I paired it with the leftover triangles from the Ori Quilt made in Animal Animal. The result? A cozy, colorful quilt we now call the Goat Quilt.

This layout keeps things simple with uniform half-square triangles, and it’s a great option for turning scraps into something useful and beautiful.

The Binding (Barely) Made It

I used the same fabric for the binding as I did on my Ori Quilt, and in a rare stroke of quilting luck, I had exactly enough — like, within a half inch. It was a true quilting miracle.

Want to Make One?

The Blind Forest Quilt Tutorial is free and available now on my blog. While it doesn’t include its own standalone fabric requirements (since it’s meant to use leftovers from the Ori Quilt), it would also work well as a scrap quilt if you’re looking for a simple, stash-busting project.

And stay tuned — I'm making the second quilt from the tutorial and it's almost done so I’ll be sharing that soon!
