The Ori Quilt in Animal Animal

The Ori Quilt in Animal Animal

You might have noticed that I am a big fan of the new Animal Animal collection from Ruby Star Society (see here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here). Sometimes I love a collection but know I won't have time to use it so I don't buy it — I cannot buy everything! But I couldn't miss out on this one.

Animal Animal is full of quirky, cheerful prints featuring everything from capybaras to snails to leaping goats, and it’s one of those collections that makes me want to start sewing the moment it arrives. When I was planning my next sample of the Ori Quilt Pattern, this collection immediately came to mind.

In a lot of my mockups, I paired the collection with Speckled in Lupine, and I had to see for myself if the combo worked as well in person as it did on screen (spoiler: it totally does). Purple is my favorite color, so the fact that it complements the collection so well was icing on the cake.

And since the Ori Quilt Pattern uses a stitch-and-flip technique that creates leftover triangles, I already had a plan for the scraps — making a second quilt using my Blind Forest tutorial. I will be sharing that project soon but it was a birthday gift for my youngest child and we are calling it "the goat quilt."

For the backing fabric, I used the blue goat print. Does it make sense to buy yardage from a collection at full price to use for a fabric backing? Probably not always, but sometimes I've just gotta do it.

The binding is a scallop stripe print, and originally the stripes would have run parallel to the length of the binding — not the look I was going for. I wanted the stripes to wrap around the quilt edge perpendicularly, so I cut the strips in the other direction. Is that technically allowed? I have no idea — I’d never done it before. But it worked just fine.

If you would like to make an Ori Quilt just like this one, you can pick up the pattern right here and you can find Animal Animal in quilt shops now. But don't wait, this collection will definitely disappear soon!
