The Evelyn Quilt in Cinnamon Toast

I was so excited to make the cover project for the Evelyn Quilt Pattern using Dana Willard's newest collection, Cinnamon Toast. The collection as a whole is so much fun, but the Circus Animals print is what really puts it over the top. I missed out on her Butterscotch collection a few years ago which had similar prints and I was NOT missing out this time.

Cinnamon Toast has lots of variety, but everything still works together, and I love all of the warm pinks, oranges, and yellows mixed in with the cooler blues and greens. It's adorable.

The Evelyn Quilt Pattern is fat quarter friendly, and this is exactly the kind of collection I had in mind when I designed the pattern. Each fat quarter is used in both versions of the plus block, so the fabrics get mixed throughout the quilt instead of staying concentrated in one area. 

Choosing the Background and Accent Fabrics

In addition to the fat quarters, the Evelyn Quilt uses a background fabric and an accent fabric. The background needs enough contrast with the feature fabrics to keep the plus shapes defined, and I recommend using a solid or small-scale print for the accent.

I really like what the accent fabric does in this pattern. It creates those little squares where the blocks come together and gives you another color to carry across the quilt without competing too much with the prints.

Sometimes when you have a collection with a mix of dark valued fabrics with mid or lighter valued fabrics, it can be difficult to balance the darker prints in the quilt top. Having an accent fabric that is consistent across the quilt can help balance that out and make the whole quilt feel more cohesive.
